Endangered Animal Report/Project
Today (Monday) I will be assigning an animal report. Your child has already chosen an endangered animal to complete a report on it. It has 3 parts.
The first 5 weeks will be spent researching about the animal, the next 4 weeks making a google slide presentation with all that you learned and last 2 weeks on a Diorama of the animal’s habitat.
- Research-When doing your research, each section must be in complete sentences. Be sure to use your own words as well as record where you found the information (resource).
- Google Slides-Each section(page) of your report needs to be at least 1 slide and include all the information. That means complete sentences! The presentation must have at least 4 images. Have fun!
- Diorama-Each student will create a diorama (a scenic representation in which sculpted figures and lifelike details are displayed) showing their animal’s habitat. To create the diorama project, a shoe box or other small box may be used as the space for the diorama. The box should not be bigger than an adult sized shoebox. Students may use plastic figures or mold items from clay to represent animals, plants, and objects in their projects. Materials such as magazines (for photos), silk or plastic plants, popsicle sticks, toothpicks, glue, construction paper, and other craft items may be used. Creativity is encouraged!!

Students will be given some class time to work on it. Whatever isn’t finished is Thursday night’s homework. Students are welcome to work on it at home each night if they choose. The packet’s cover sheet with give you a glimpse into what we be our focus for the week in reading and language arts. Please use this as a guide to stimulate conversations with your child about what he or she is learning.
Spelling Pretest
On Monday (or the first day of our school week), the students’ will be given a spelling pretest on our week’s words. This is meant for me to see what they already know so there is no need to study for them. The list consists of 15 words and 3 challenge words. Their week’s spelling list will be determined by how they do on this pretest. It will be as follows:
miss 5 or more= 15 words(from the pretest)
miss 1-4= 18 words(from the pretest)
miss 0=Bonus Words (usually between 8-10 words)

Math Test Grading
Here is the breakdown for how the math tests are being graded this year:
Multiple Choice Question= 1 point for each answer choice
Each question in the a problem= 1 point each
Explain= 2 points
Most of the questions are asking more than one thing from the students. We are working on reading each question carefully so all parts of the question get answered. Also, we are really concentrating on being able to explain in words the steps and operations we are using to answer a question.
Mattish Market
Along with the students’ businesses, there will be a small business run by a parent that consists of donated items. Items can be from places like the Dollar Store. At any time throughout the year, you can drop off the items in our room. Our next Mattish Market will be Friday, March 27th
Overnight Field Trip: We will have one overnight field trip this year. If you are planning to attend this field trip, you need to be fingerprinted and have a current TB test. If you were at Gravenstein last year and had this done, you do not need to redo it. Please let me know ASAP if you need a form. I will notify the office then you may go pick it up. Please do not wait to get this done as it may take awhile to get an appointment. No parent can attend an overnight field trip unless they are fingerprinted and have had a TB test. Please have the fingerprints and TB test completed by December 1st.
